Wireless Smart Devices and Their Coordination

Description

This subcontract to Ambient Computing, Inc.'s Small Business Innovation Research Phase I project will support development of innovative technologies for smart infrastructure, and in particular wireless sensors and control devices that will be coordinated by a distributed software system called the MetaOS. The first smart wireless devices will focus on environmental sensing and control; that is, measurement and control of parameters such as temperature and humidity, although these devices will be merely archetypes for a wide range of smart components. The behavior of the smart devices will be coordinated by the MetaOS, a software system developed by Ambient Computing, Inc. to provide traditional operating system functions to fully distributed collections of smart computing and networking devices. The proposed system will demonstrate the technical and commercial feasibility of connected and coordinated smart devices. The early commercial applications of the proposed work will focus on improvement of energy consumption and personalization of environmental parameters. Existing means of addressing these problems are highly proprietary, difficult, and expensive to deploy; and they support only limited algorithmic sophistication due to the limited sensing and control options. The proposed, more advanced systems, built upon accepted standards following advantageous cost curves, will lead to significant reduction in overall energy consumption while providing personal comfort and financial benefits to consumers.

This proposed effort will support Ambient Computing, Inc.' s endeavors by testing and evaluating some of the missing and necessary pieces for smart environments, specifically, small and low-cost wireless devices with integrated computing capabilities.

Partner with ITTC

The Information and Telecommunication Technology Center at the University of Kansas has developed several assistance policies that enhance interactions between the Center and local, Kansas, or national companies.

Sponsored Research Agreement

Individuals and organizations can enter into agreements with KUCR/ITTC and provide funds for sponsored research to be performed at ITTC with the assistance of faculty, staff and students.

Licensing and Royalty/Equity Agreement

An ITTC goal is the development of investment-grade technologies for transfer to, and marketing by, local, Kansas, and national businesses. To enhance this process, the Center has developed flexible policies that allow for licensing, royalty, and equity arrangements to meet both the needs of ITTC and the company.

Commercialization Development

Companies with a technology need that can be satisfied with ITTC's resources can look to us for assistance. We can develop a relationship with interested partners that will provide for the development of a technology suited for commercialization.

ITTC Resource Access

ITTC resources, including computers and software systems, may be made available to Kansas companies in accordance with the Center's mission and applicable Regents and University policies.
