Network Monitoring for Performance Analysis and for Enabling Network-Aware Applications

Emerging Next Generation Internet (NGI) applications will push the limits of available network bandwidth. Two critical services are required to guarantee maximum efficient use of the network resources. The first is a unit for monitoring the performance of each component within the system. The second is a system for monitoring current network characteristics and providing this information to network-aware applications, which can effectively adapt to the current network conditions. Both capabilities require an adaptive monitoring infrastructure: a monitor data publishing mechanism and monitor data analysis tools. This research project will develop a grid service that will provide both of these capabilities.

In addition to being able to locate performance problems, the new class of applications will need to be network-aware. Network-aware applications attempt to adjust their resource demands in response to changes in resource availability. At the same time, they require a general-purpose service that provides information about the past, current, and future state of all the network links that applications are inclined to use.

This project entails the development and deployment of a NGI service that addresses these network-aware issues and provides information on network components, network systems, and applications. This service is called ENABLE: Enhancing of Network-aware Applications and BottLeneck Elimination. This service will include monitoring, visualization, archival, problem detection, monitoring data summary and retrieval tools. The results of the monitoring will be published in directory services via the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) and allow network-aware applications to obtain the information needed to adapt to present conditions.

Currently, a variety of ad hoc techniques are used for performance analysis of distributed systems. The ENABLE system will provide a single, comprehensive, easy-to-use system to address this need. This system will make it much easier to locate problems or bottlenecks in NGI "computational grid" applications, and ENABLE has potential to become one of several important "grid services" in the NGI environment.

The Information and Telecommunication Technology Center at the University of Kansas has developed several assistance policies that enhance interactions between the Center and local, Kansas, or national companies.

Sponsored Research Agreement

Individuals and organizations can enter into agreements with KUCR/ITTC and provide funds for sponsored research to be performed at ITTC with the assistance of faculty, staff and students.

Licensing and Royalty/Equity Agreement

An ITTC goal is the development of investment-grade technologies for transfer to, and marketing by, local, Kansas, and national businesses. To enhance this process, the Center has developed flexible policies that allow for licensing, royalty, and equity arrangements to meet both the needs of ITTC and the company.

Commercialization Development

Companies with a technology need that can be satisfied with ITTC's resources can look to us for assistance. We can develop a relationship with interested partners that will provide for the development of a technology suited for commercialization.

ITTC Resource Access

ITTC resources, including computers and software systems, may be made available to Kansas companies in accordance with the Center's mission and applicable Regents and University policies.
