Der Krieg ist die Hölle.

Carl Schlöh

“War is hell.”—Sherman.

Der Krieg ist die Hölle,

Der Krieg ist der Fluch,

Den seit Menschengedenken

Die Menschheit trug.

Der Krieg ist die Hölle,

Ist Jammer und Leid,

Und ist’s und bleibt es

In Ewigkeit.

Der Krieg ist die Hölle,

Die Bestienwut,

Die tief in dem Herzen

Den Menschheit ruht.

Der Krieg ist die Hölle,

Der Menschheit Fluch,

Schandfleck um Schandfleck

Im Schicksalsbuch.

Carl Schlöh.

Sherman

William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891), a general in the United States Army during the American Civil War, took over as commander of the Western Theater after General Ulysses S. Grant became Commander-in-Chief. According to the Yale Book of Quotations, “War is hell” has been erroneously associated with a speech Sherman gave at Michigan Military Academy in June 1879. The actual quote comes from a speech he made to veterans in Ohio on August 11, 1880: “There is many a boy here to-day who looks on war as all glory, but, boys, it is all hell.”
