Lecture Hours and Venue: TR 11 – 12:15, Summerfield Hall 506
Textbook: Introduction to Automata Theory, Languages, and Computation by John Hopcroft, Rajeev Motwani, and Jeffrey Ullman, 3rd ed.
Homework: There will be weekly homework assignments due every Tuesday in class. Homework will consist of book problems as well as "additional problems", both of which will be posted on the course website. Your lowest homework score will not be included in your grade.
Quizzes: There will be short weekly quizzes at the start of class every Thursday. The quizzes will be over the material from the previous two class session – basic definitions and simple problems. Your lowest quiz score will not be included in your grade.
Exams: There will be a midterm exam and a final exam. The midterm exam will consist of an in-class portion and a take-home portion. The in-class portion will be given on October 10. The take-home portion of this exam will be due a week later. The date and time of the final exam will be announced at a later date.
Course Grading: Your course grade will be calculated based on the breakdown below.
Homeworks: 45%
Quizzes: 15%
Exams (incl. final): 40%
Letter grades (including +/- designation) will be assigned as usual.
Honor Code: All work submitted for credit must be the student's own. If you have worked with another student on a homework problem, you should indicate it in your solution. Such cooperation is permitted, but your work must be your own. Quizzes and exams should be completed without unauthorized aid.
